I initially fell in love with the idea of Karrot and how it doesn’t feel very commercial. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences on Kijiji so I appreciated how understandable and functional the app is. It didn’t have any traffic in the beginning but I stuck with it because I enjoyed the experience plus I really needed to sell a cat hammock swing chair. The app attracts good people and everyone is so genuine and sincere - I’ve met people that have told me they’re on it 24/7! Q: Why Choose Secondhand? I was always into secondhand thrifting because I used to shop at flea markets with my mom who had a hobby of finding unique antique gems. Nowadays flea markets are becoming more commercialized so I’ve switched to Karrot and found so many great deals on there. My favourite memory of an item I bought was a little crocheted doll. The seller crochets as a hobby, and she was selling it for only $5-$10! They were so beautiful and made a great addition to my home! Q: What have you given away during Freecycle? It’s crazy how fast free items go. I had over 15 people message me over bottle hooks! I had someone who was a hobbyist for collecting keychains and he wanted all of them. I've given away everything from empty candle tins, and even free packets of ketchup! I thought they were useless but you meet all kinds of very interesting people on here. I was baffled - I was like omg they were not wrong in their ads - “You really can sell ANYTHING”. Q: Selling or Buying Tips? If you want to get more sales, authenticity is key: use real photos and research reasonable pricing by comparing similar listings on Karrot. New users, or "Rookie Karroters," should focus on building trust rather than aggressively bargaining. I would suggest asking for 10-25% off the price instead of sending a lowball offer of 50% or 70% lower. Craft your message to be more human as well…a personal touch goes a long way! Q: Memorable Karrot Experience? My best memory was the first item I sold. It was that cat hammock swing chair - my cats just didn’t like it and it was taking up room in my condo. What’s funny was that I saw it getting reposted on Karrot a couple of times afterwards! It turns out that the person I sold to’s cat also didn’t like so so they had to resell it (I could tell since she reused the same photos haha). And then I saw it on Karrot AGAIN a couple months after but eventually it got off of Karrot 🤣! Q: What do you think makes the Karrot community special? A lot of the Karrot people do stay in touch and continue to chat with eachother so it truly is a real community. I follow them afterwards and I prefer shopping from them so I always go back to the same people. People also really appreciate the free giveaways and aren’t used to an app that gives back. Many people on Karrot are newcomers who can’t afford much so it really brings the community together just by trading in person. I’ve never seen the app so popular until recently!
